Abstract

This commentary describes sources of medical trust related to flu vaccine uptake disparities for
African Americans. Collective memory of historical trauma, poor patient-provider communication and
public home places contribute to how vaccine knowledge is constructed, and resulting perceptions. Provid-
ers and health educators will need to recognize and respect sources of knowledge in order to increase trust
and improve vaccine uptake rates.
